Basic Oil Pump Operation

Basic oil pump operation is controlled by engine RPM and throttle position. On most Yamaha's using the Mikuni oil pumps, they have a ramp that controls the pump stroke till about 3/8 throttle anything over that is full stroke on the pump. So if you are a throttle jockey, going full throttle corner to corner you could actually tie the cable that controls the pump wide open and not be any different then the minimum setting. Take into consideration that the stock jetting is on the rich side, which requires more throttle position for a given speed. And a well clutched sled will need less throttle to go down the trail. Therefore a proper jetted and clutched sled will consume less oil regardless of oil pump setting. This is why there is more to tuning a sled then slamming on aggressive clutch set-up. Example, my 2001srx will consume 1 QT of oil in 100 miles doing radar runs and run 230 miles on 1 QT on steady throttle trail riding with the same oil pump setting.
